At the beginning of March, the Internal Security Bureau detained six officials of the Riga Regional Administration of the State Police and one former State Police official on suspicion of abuse of official position. Four private individuals operating in the funeral services sector were also detained.
The pre-trial investigation indicates that State Police officials repeatedly misused their positions for personal gain by disclosing, during the performance of their duties, information about deceased persons and their relatives to specific funeral service providers. This enabled those providers to contact the relatives and secure service contracts.
During procedural activities, items potentially containing evidence relevant to the criminal offences were seized.
The court ordered pre-trial detention for one State Police official, while another has been prohibited from holding a specific position within the State Police. Other suspects have been subjected to non-custodial security measures.
The Internal Security Bureau underscores that integrity and lawful conduct are essential in public service and acknowledges those officials who uphold these standards.
No further information is being disclosed in the interests of the investigation. The Bureau reminds that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the law.
