At the end of January and the beginning of February, the Internal Security Bureau detained five officials of the Riga Regional Administration of the State Police and one former State Police official on suspicion of abuse of office.

During the pre-trial investigation, evidence was obtained indicating that the former and current State Police officials abused their official position by disclosing information obtained in the course of their duties regarding persons involved in road traffic accidents to another State Police official. This official had previously been detained by the Internal Security Bureau in December 2025 on suspicion of conducting unregistered and unauthorised business activities.

Furthermore, the pre-trial investigation established that the official detained in December incited other State Police officials to abuse their official position for personal gain and is also suspected of unlawful possession and use of a means of payment.

Within the framework of the criminal proceedings, the Internal Security Bureau carried out procedural activities during which items that may contain information related to the criminal offences under investigation were located and seized.

The State Police officials involved in the alleged criminal offences have been granted the status of persons entitled to defence, and security measures not involving deprivation of liberty have been applied, including a prohibition on holding specific positions within the State Police.

t should be emphasised that the criminal offence was uncovered in close cooperation with the State Police.

In the interests of the investigation, no further information is currently provided.

The Internal Security Bureau reminds that no person shall be considered guilty of committing a criminal offence until their guilt has been proven in accordance with the procedures prescribed by the Criminal Procedure Law.
