The Internal Security Bureau is a public administration authority whose mandate is to detect, prevent, and investigate criminal offences committed by officials and employees of institutions subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior (with the exception of the State Security Service), as well as by officials and employees of the Prison Administration. Through the fulfilment of these functions, the Bureau contributes to strengthening public trust in public administration and enhancing public safety.

The competence of the Internal Security Bureau also includes the prevention, detection, and investigation of criminal offences involving violence committed in the course of official duties by employees of the Port Police and Municipal Police.

The Internal Security Bureau conducts pre-trial investigations and carries out operational activities in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations.

The activities of the Internal Security Bureau are overseen by the Minister for the Interior, while the legality of operational activities and pre-trial investigation proceedings is supervised by the Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Latvia.

The Internal Security Bureau has been in operation since 1 November 2015.
